Periods 3,4,6- Sigma Notation Review

April 14th, 2008

Sigma Notation Σ, the Greek letter sigma (if you have an old browser that can’t display Sigma, it looks like a mix between an E and a Z), can be used to simplify sequences of numbers.  The sum of terms in the sequence is found using sigma notation (also called summations).  Example:

1. Problem: 4

Σ (2n + 1)

n = 1

Solution: This is a sum of (2n + 1) from

1 to 4.

Plug all numbers from 1 to 4 into

the general term ((2n + 1) in this case)

and then add the terms together.

(2(1) + 1) = 3

(2(2) + 1) = 5

(2(3) + 1) = 7

(2(4) + 1) = 9

3 + 5 + 7 + 9 = 24

This is what you are doing for problems 28 and 29 on your homework tonight

Period 5- Extra Credit Opportunity

April 14th, 2008

Hello Class,

Today we talked about car license  plates.  We noticed that cars have 1 number, 3 letters, 3 numbers and that trucks have 1 number, 1 letter, and 5 letters.  How many different car license plates can be made in California?  How many truck license plates can be made in California?  Which one, cars or trucks, has more possibilities (try to figure this out logically, not by looking at your answers).  Explain all your work in words (similar to the quiz we took before break).  worth 10 points on Tuesday, 5 points on Wednesday.

BONUS:  Find one other state’s license plate pattern (looking on the internet, friend’s car, etc) and find the number of different license plates that could be made.  How does this answer compare to California’s trucks and cars?  Again, give a logical explanation for your reasoning, not just the mathematical answer.  Make sure to tell me where you got your information from(website link, etc). Worth 6 extra points Tuesday, 3 extra points wednesday.

Enjoy!  And, if you are confused about the geometric probability from today, don’t stress about it too much! Focus on the rest of the homework!

–Mrs. Kirch
